The Benefits of Yoga

Yoga is a discipline that has been practiced throughout the world for centuries. The first known depictions of Yoga is from around 2700BC when seals showing yoga asanas were found in the Indus civilisation.

Whilst there are many forms of Yoga, at Health and Holistics, we practice and teach Hatha Yoga. Hatha yoga was brought to the Western world in the late 1800s and was more popularised in the 1960s and 1970s through the Hinduism movement.

Hatha yoga focusses predominantly on the Asanas, or postures, used in the practice of yoga, as well as breath work, or Prayanama.

The benefits of yoga are varied dependant upon the discipline, however with Hatha yoga the benefits include increased strength and flexibility, increased circulatory and cardio health, decreased symptoms from areas of mental health including anxiety and depression and maintaining a healthy metabolism and weight reduction*

Breath Work, or Prayanama, is used within Hatha yoga to reduce stress, increase sleep, reduce blood pressure, increase lung capacity and increase mindfulness. It allows us a special focus during Savasana and meditation to allow us to clear our minds and focus solely on our inhales and exhales.

Yoga can be a gentle form of stretching, a way to unwind and reset, or a fast paced HIT style exercise. Yogi’s choice!
